Question types on the test
The test isn't only multiple choice. CITB's demo test shows eight styles of question. Knowing them stops you losing marks on how to answer, not what to answer.
Facts checked 25 October 2026
- Single answer
- Pick the one right answer from the options.
- Choose two
- Tick two boxes. Both must be right to get the mark.
- Picture options
- The options are pictures, such as signs or equipment, and you pick the right one.
- Drag and drop
- Drag answers into boxes. This covers picking two, matching pictures to groups, and putting steps in order.
- Hot spot
- Tap the place on a picture that answers the question. There are no options to pick from.
- Hot area
- A picture is split into areas, and you pick the one that answers the question.
- Reasoned judgement
- Each option pairs "Yes" or "No" with a reason. Pick the one where both parts are right.
- Option selection
- Read some numbered statements, then pick the right mix, such as "1 and 3 only".
Tips for each style
- Choose two: read the question for the number of answers it wants, and tick exactly that many.
- Picture questions: look at the whole picture before you tap. The hazard is often at the edge.
- Putting steps in order: start with the first step you are sure of, then work outwards.
- Reasoned judgement: an option can say the right "Yes" with the wrong reason. Both halves must be right.
- Option selection: decide on each numbered statement first, then find the option that matches.
Our mock tests use the same styles, so the screen looks familiar on the day.
