Renewing your CSCS card
To renew most CSCS cards you need a new pass in the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test, from the last 2 years. Your old pass doesn't carry over.

Why renewers get caught out
- The pass mark is 90%. You can only get 5 wrong, so knowing site safety "from experience" isn't always enough.
- The test asks what the rules say, not what happens on your site. Answer by the law and the guidance.
- New question styles. The test now uses drag and drop, hot spot and "choose two" questions. See question types.
- Behavioural case studies were removed in June 2019, so if you sat it before then, the format looks different.
A quick refresher plan
- Take a timed mock test cold. Don't revise first.
- Look at your score by section. Anything under 90% needs work.
- Practice those topics and read every explanation, including for the questions you got right.
- Take another mock. When you score 45 or more twice, book the test.

Questions people ask
Do I need to retake the CSCS test to renew my card?
Yes, for most cards. CSCS asks for a pass in the CITB HS&E test from the last 2 years when you apply, so the pass you got for your first card won't count.
Is the renewal test different?
No. It's the same test as the first time: 50 questions in 45 minutes, and 45 right to pass (90%).
When should I renew?
Sit the test before your card runs out, so there's time to apply. Your pass stays valid for a card application for 2 years.
How much does renewing cost?
The test is £23.50 per attempt, and the card application is £36.
